COURSE TITLE: Introduction to Digital Photography

SUMMARY:

South Seas runs this as the 2 day version of their 1 year course. It covers the same topics, though 2 days would not be enough to gain hands on experience in every style mentioned. The course advertises “the practical use of the school's digital cameras, studio flash equipment and image processing computer facilities.” But, you have to bring your own DSLR and memory cards and something to store your own files. The school is Mac based, so make sure your drives etc. support Mac file formats. The big attraction? The range of topics covered gives the student exposure to genres of photography and studio facilities they could probably not experience on their own. Think of this course as a chance to see aspects of real professional photography you don’t normally have access to. And time in a real studio will be a big confidence boost for any would be pro shooter. There are a lot of out of date items on the website, so be sure to contact them directly to make sure of current prices and details.

Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design

COURSE TITLE: Introduction to Digital Photography

SUMMARY:

This course is pitched at absolute beginners who bring their own DSLR and lenses. The genres studied include landscape, portraiture, documentary and abstract, and students have to complete a weekly assignment to put the genre into practice. The school boasts a properly equipped studio, and a lighting ‘demonstration’ is included, but as it’s a beginner’s class, you will probably spend most of the time learning your own equipment. The website is very light on details and you will have to contact the school directly to find out any information such as what number of courses you need to graduate. There is also a ‘Portrait’ stream taught by Meighan Ellis, a noted New Zealand photographer. Like many schools of this size, the emphasis is on the degree programs, and the short courses seemed aimed at recruiting for the longer courses.
